Temperament

If you're looking for an active breed who is everything including calm, assertive, quick to learn, fearless, courageous, playful, loving, loyal and protective, then you have come across the right breed. The German Shepherd needs daily outside activity; both mental and physical activity daily in order to remain the best that he or she can be while indoors at night. This breed is an excellent family dog for an active family, as well a wonderful working partner whether you are on a farm, or in poliece work. This breed requires a firm, consistent and confident dog owner who is able to set rules and boundaries while the puppy is still young. Early obedience class is highly recommended for both the new owner and puppy to attend to learn how to properly correct and teach your dog, providing a solid base foundation in the relationship with your new family member. This breed is known for not being good with cats and small animals, however they are wonderful with other canines they grow up with, and can be good with others as well if properly socialized. This breed is very loving, loyal and easy to teach as they have a natural want to learn.

Appearance

The German Shepherd is a large breed dog with males and females measuring 22-26 inches in height and weighing 75-85 pounds in weight. This breed is built large, lean and active. Their triangular shaped head is rounded at the top where their two large, triangular shaped ears stand firm. Their muzzle forms into a long scissor bite. Their large nose is available in liver to black in color. Their two almond shaped eyes are available in dark brown to black in color. The German Shepherd has three types of hair coats available, including double coat, plus coat and longhaired coat. They are all available in solid black, black and tan, white, blue and liver.

Grooming

Please note that this breed does shed all throughout the year, as well as heavily shedding during change of seasons.

Special Notes

A properly fenced in area is highly recommended for this breed to ensure safety of your new dog and other animals while outdoors. Please fully educate yourself about the German Shepherd prior to adding one to your family to ensure you are able to provide life long physical and financial care to your new pet. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.

History

It may come as no surprise to learn that the German Shepherd was created in Germany. This breed was created after crossing different types of local herding and farm dogs in the areas of Wutemburg and Bavaria. This breed is extremely popular in the USA today as a family companion, working dog on the farm and in the police force as well as even being active in the war. The German Shepherd Dog is a magnificent breed.
