Temperament

The Keeshond is a dog breed that absolutely needs to be included in as many family outings, gatherings and activities as possible to be happy. This breed is very outgoing, fun, expressive, loving and affectionate. The Keeshond cannot be kept in another room, locked up or alone for hours at a time. When being raised by a family that can meet his or her needs, the Keeshond is an excellent choice of breed. This breed does especially well with children and growing families. This breed is good with humans of all ages, other pets and dogs. This breed requires a firm and confident owner who is able to set early rules and boundaries and remain pack leader at all times. We recommend early socialization classes and obedience courses. This breed is excellent at preforming tricks and tasks. This breed does bark whenever they feel something odd is happening near their family or home, which is why they make a great watchdog. This breed requires a good amount of both physical and mental exercise.

Appearance

The Keeshond is a medium to large sized breed with males and females measuring 17-19 inches in height and weighing an average of 40-60 pounds in weight. This breed has a wedge shaped head forming into a thin, rectangular muzzle. Their two ears are triangular in shape and stand firmly at the top of their head. Their entire body appears very broad and round due to their abundant hair that stands straight out, and covers their body. Their eyes are medium in size, round and are generally a light brown to black in color. Their tail is medium in length, covered in hair and curved up and over their back. Their long, abundant, double coat is rough to the touch and available in all shades of gray, with tan, black and cream all throughout the coat.

Grooming

Daily brushing and bathing when needed. This breed sheds daily.

Special Notes

Please fully educate yourself about the Keeshond breed prior to adding one to your family to ensure you are able to make a life long commitment both physically and financially for the life of your new family member. This breed requires a properly fenced in yard or proper fitting harness and leash while outdoors at all times.

History

Originating prior to the 1850's, the Keeshond is the result of the Samoyed, Chow Chow, Finnish Spitz, Norwegian Elkhound and Pomeranian bloodlines. This breed was known as the "Dutch Barge Dog", because it was used to guard and watch all of the boats. Today, this breed is popular in the United States as used as a working dog and companion dog.
